How can I find lasting happiness?

When I first met Elliott, it confused the life out of me trying to figure out what the hell he had to be so happy about. He was still living at home with his parents, he didn’t drink, he was 21 and still studying, his house was pretty basic, he had a rubbish Minimum wage Saturday job, he didn’t have a massive group of lads to go to kavos with, he was single, he didn’t have abs, he drove a crappy saxo (sorry ell) and he couldn’t even start his day off with a cup of tea and a custard cream. Yet he was genuinely the happiest person I had met in my life, I was baffled.

I was in a relationship, we had a decent car and a nice house. I had a three year old, we went on holiday often and I had a bunch of girls that I spent countless weekends laughing and drinking with, yet i was completely miserable. It made no sense to me whatsoever, I was convinced that I should be happier than he was because I had all of thing things in life that are supposed to make you happy. So what did he have that I didn’t?

One of my favourite scriptures can be found in the Book of Mormon, Mosiah 2:41 ;

‘And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it.’

Happiness can be found in the things of the world, money, alcohol, one night stands, BUT that happiness isn’t joy. It isn’t fulfilling, and it certainly isn’t everlasting. Elliott was happier than me because his perspective was an eternal one, he knew that the traditional ‘happiness-bringing’ things in this world, wouldn’t last, because this world isn’t going last. Everlasting happiness comes from living a life that coincides with God‘s plan for us.
